HUGO GUÉNAND DALBY

In the dynamic landscape of architectural innovation and artistic brilliance, Hugo Guénand Dalby (2000) stands out as a formidable presence. Combining his Franco-Norwegian heritage with a vibrant canvas of creative expression, this 23-year-old visionary finds himself at the crossroads of tradition and ingenuity. With an innate ability to infuse inspiration into architectural storytelling, Hugo crafts narratives that redefine and elevate the essence of design.

Born and raised between Tours and Drøbak, Norway, and now rooted in Paris for over five years, Hugo’s artistic journey unfolds with a narrative that transcends geographical borders. A graduate with honors from Penninghen in 2023, he not only secured the title of major of his promotion but also left an indelible mark with his groundbreaking project, « Utøya, le regard d’une île.«

Utøya, a place seared into the collective memory for tragic reasons, becomes the canvas for Hugo’s architectural ode. His vision, encapsulated in « Utøya, le regard d’une île, » extends beyond a mere architectural creation; it is a poignant narrative paying homage to life after the fateful events of July 22, 2011. Through this initiative, Hugo weaves a tale of resilience, celebrating the spirit of Norway and its people.

This architectural venture invites spectators to embark on an immersive journey, exploring the heart of Utøya for an inspiring exploration of life and reconstruction. Hugo’s project is a testament to the transformative power of architecture, turning a site of tragedy into a space for reflection, remembrance, and renewal.

In his project, « Utøya, le regard d’une île, » Hugo embraces the island’s spirit, inviting visitors to experience the profound emotions tied to its history. The architectural elements, carefully crafted, contribute to a narrative of hope and resilience. The broken stone, symbolizing the fissure of the island, becomes a floating stage, composed of translucent concrete components that mirror the contours of the granite. Each facet is unique, creating an immersive experience where visitors can freely navigate the space, transforming the floor into a dynamic platform.

Hugo’s creative essence transcends traditional architectural confines. His projects are immersive narratives that intertwine storytelling, performance, and emotional resonance. An avid innovator, he finds inspiration in a myriad of influences—from jazz and cinema to Norway’s essence, oratory literature, and the visual arts. Nature and humanity remain pivotal, threading seamlessly through the fabric of his creations.

Guided by architectural visionaries like Jun’ya Ishigami and Peter Zumthor, Hugo navigates the landscape of spatial design with inventive brilliance. His eclectic inspirations encompass a spectrum of artistic influences, with Olafur Eliasson, Sophie Calle, and Dani Karavan shaping his visual expression. The painting realm reflects the influence of Munch, Dumas, and Rothko, while Georges Perec and Sylvain Tesson contribute to his narrative depth. Cinematic inspirations, ranging from « Festen » to « Barry Lindon, » ignite his passion for visual storytelling, accompanied by the nuanced perspectives of photographers like Moriyama Tomatsu.

Through his dedication to storytelling and immersive experiences, Hugo Guénand Dalby stands as a beacon of creativity, transforming architectural spaces into narratives that resonate with the human spirit. As he continues to work on personal projects with the intent of exhibition and presentation to diverse professionals and creatives, Hugo invites us to contemplate the profound interplay of architecture, emotion, and the human connection.
